It's UMAC #1 VS. #2 This Weekend
The Knights are led by junior Jeff Dolan, who has started all 22 of the Knights games and is batting a robust .434 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, and 11 RBIs. The Knights also will bring senior outfielder Shane Krause who has also started all 22 games for the Knights and is batting .370 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, and is leading the Knights with 4 homeruns. Leading the Knights on the mound is senior Nate Hochmuth who has a 5-1 record and has started 7 games for the Knights. Hochmuth has pitched 4 complete games for the Knights and has struck out 29 batter in 45.1 innings of work.
Make sure to make it down to the Wade this Friday at 3:00 PM and Saturday at Noon to catch the Saints and the Knights as they battle atop the UMAC standings. We have also received word that this Friday marks the opening of the concession stand at the Wade, and that the City of Duluth has turned the water on, meaning the restrooms are up and running! So, anybody who used the indoor bathrooms last weekend, the city plumber would like to talk to you. Plus, that's kinda gross. Anyway, we have also heard that Wade Stadium has received permission from the college (and the nuns) to sell beer during CSS games! So, come on down to the Wade this weekend for some good baseball, a couple of hot dogs, a hamburger, and some ice cold Budweiser! We'll see you there!

Saints Claim 9th Shutout By Blanking Storm
At the plate, the Saints were led by D.J. Lahti, Daryl Fuchihara, and Ryan Bruns who each had two hits. Lahti had a triple and an RBI, Fuchihara had a triple, a homerun, and 3 RBIs, while Bruns had a double and 2 RBIs.
With the victory the Saints extended their winning streak to 20 straight games and now stand at 23-2 overall, and 11-0 in the UMAC. The Saints also moved to within four shutouts of the NCAA Division III record of 13 shutouts on the season, set in 1999 by both Saint Scholastica and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Crown College Storm fell to 5-20 overall and 3-8 in the UMAC.
The two teams will meet again today at noon for a double header at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

Baseball At Home Today!
Finally, Home Sweet Home!
The Saints enter the three-game series with an overall record of 22-2-1 and a record of 10-0-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). They are set to take on the Crown College Storm, who is currently residing near the bottom of the UMAC Standings with an overall record of 5-19 and a 3-7 record in conference play. There is no question that this weekend’s two games, really shouldn’t be too exciting, but on Monday, Northland College proved that maybe the Saints were human, by playing CSS to a 10-10 tie before the game was called due to darkness. Could this showing by the Northland Lumberjacks give the rest of the UMAC hope that maybe they could sneak one past the Saint Scholastica powerhouse? Crown College is hoping to build off of Northland College’s momentum and to take down CSS. The Saints don’t really see that as much of a possibility, especially since the Saints will finally get the chance to play at the Wade in front of their fans, the best fans in the UMAC.
How excited are the Saints to finally be playing at home in front of their fans? I went directly to the source to find out. Junior catcher Seth Harvey is excited about this weekend because, “(Wade Stadium) means a lot, Wade has a lot of history from past year of our program.” Wade Stadium also means a lot to junior transfer from Seton Hall, Ben Grams. Ben is a Duluth native, having played his high school ball for Duluth East High School. Ben said, “It’s the only real stadium in Duluth, so whenever you get to play on it you feel like it’s a special game. Since I was 13 or 14 I have always enjoyed playing at Wade more than any other place.”
I also asked these players what their favorite part of playing their home games at Wade is. Sophomore Brandon Swartz said that, “playing in front of home fans, and getting the chance for people to see what our team is all about.” This was echoed by Seth Harvey, who added, “seeing the alumni come out to watch as well.” For Ben Grams, this will be his first experience playing in the Wade for the Saints. Sophomore pitcher Mark Moriarty feels good about playing at home too, adding, "Playing in front of the CSS students is always fun, because they don’t get to see us play a lot because of the bad weather up here. Also, it is a fun atmosphere playing at a nice ballpark like Wade."
Duluth has been baseball starved for months now, and since it is finally getting warmer, Duluth baseball fans have been itching to get out to watch local teams in action. I asked a few of the Saints players why they thought the average baseball fan should come down to the Wade this weekend to watch the Saints in action. Ben Grams said, “There's always more excitement at the opener and hopefully we'll use that extra energy to play some excellent baseball.” Seth Harvey added that if the average baseball fan comes down to the Wade this weekend they “would see a great college baseball game and see how well a High Performance Team operates." Mark Moriarty agreed with Seth saying, "They will see solid baseball whether it be pitching, defense, base running, or hitting."
Every player I talked to was hoping for good weather this weekend at the Wade so that the Saints fans would be out in full force. Ben Grams also added that Saints fans should be “loud and supportive.” It’s up to you now Saints fans! Let’s get out to the Wade to cheer for your nationally-ranked Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team! In the words of pitcher Ben Grams, “It's exciting to be playing in Duluth again.” We’ll see you out there!

Streak up to 18 as Saints Sweep Cougars
In the opener, Swartz had two hits and scored a run while Daryl Fuchihara had two RBIs. That proved to be more than enough run support for Saints starting pitcher Keith Ritsche, who went five innings and improved his record to 4-1 on the season. Ritsche was followed on the mound by seniors D.J. Lahti and Joe Calaguire who each threw a scoreless inning en route to a 6-0 Saints victory.
In the second game the saints were led once again by Swartz who hit a first inning grand slam as part of a nine-run first inning for the Saints. Also adding to the Saints offense was Lahti who had a triple and scored twice and Chad Weiss who had two hits. On the mound, the Saints were led by sophomore Mark Erickson who started and went three innings for the win. He was followed by four more pitchers who each worked a scoreless inning. Together, the five Saints hurlers combined for the shut-out.
The Saints have now shut-out their opponents in four straight games and have a total of eight shut-outs for the season. The NCAA Division III record for shut-outs is 13, accomplished by a couple of teams from the 1999 season. In 1999 both Saint Scholastica and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh had 13 shut-outs. The Saints also lowered their team ERA to 1.74 on the season. The Saints increased their record to 21-2 overall and 9-0 in the UMAC while the Cougars fell to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the UMAC.

Saints Extend Streak, Take Down Cougars
Saints Move to NCAA; Break into Rankings
The Saints are among the first teams from the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference to make the move from the NAIA to NCAA Division III, although the rest of the conference will make the move complete in 2008. Until that time; however, the conference champion will not receive an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament. That means that the Saints are stuck looking for one of a limited number of At-Large Bids to the “Big Dance.”
The Saints’ Baseball team is joined in the move from NAIA to NCAA Division III by the school’s Softball team. Last season the Saint’s Softball team cruised through the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference all the way to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. The Softball qualified for the NAIA National Championship by winning the NAIA Region III Tournament and ended up finishing the season ninth in the nation with a 40-8 overall record.
The Saints Baseball team made some big strides towards obtaining one of those coveted At-Large Bids for the NCAA Tournament by breaking into the American Baseball Coaches Association’s NCAA Division III Rankings on Monday, April 11. After the Saints took care of the Bethany Lutheran Vikings in three games over the weekend the Saints found themselves going from not ranked, to number 30 in the nation. The Saints were also ranked number 4 in the Midwest Region. Both the National poll and the Midwest Regional are topped by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater who moved from number 3 to number 1 in the Nation by way of their 18-0 record for the year.
The Saints are looking to move even more onto the national radar by taking care of the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars this weekend. The Saints enter this weekend’s tilt with an 18-2 overall record and 6-0 in the conference. The Cougars of Morris enter Friday’s game at 5-10 overall and 4-3 in the UMAC. Look for the Saints to move even further up the ABCA National Poll when the next poll is released on Monday, April 25.

What would your dream date be like?
It would be in a log cabin overlooking a lake on a cool winter night, with a light snowfall. We would start off inside with a homemade dinner, and after dinner move to the hot tub with some drinks. We would sit there most of the night and then end the night with massages.
And, who would that dream date be with?

Saints Start UMAC Season Undefeated
The Saints entered Friday’s games with a 12-2 record on the season following their annual spring trip to Florida. The Eagles entered conference play with a 2-7 overall record. In 2004 the Eagles finished 3rd in the UMAC and had a 25-15 record overall. The Eagles are projected to finish the 2005 season 3rd in the UMAC once again having received 37 total points in the pre-season poll. The Saints were picked to once again win the UMAC regular season title for the ninth straight time. The Saints received 49 total points and all but one of the first place votes in the pre-season poll. Entering the 2005 season the Saints hold a 40-13 record all-time against Northwestern, with their last loss to the Eagles coming on April 21, 1998.
Friday’s game started at 3:00 PM in St. Paul at the Eagles home field. The Saints sent senior Joey Calaguire to the mound in search of his third win of the season. The Eagles countered with junior Todd Randall. The Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Calaguire was able to keep the Eagles at bay by working six innings and allowing two runs with only one run being earned. The Saints were able to knock Randall out after two innings allowing nine runs, all earned. Steve Henry came in the game to relieve Calaguire and worked the remaining three innings and allowed three runs, all earned. At the plate, the Saints were led by Daryl Fuchihara who went 3 for 5 with three homeruns and eight RBIs. Fuchihara also scored four runs. Luke Olin went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and two RBIs. Steve Kraushaar went 2 for 2 with two doubles and one run scored for the Saints in his third game of the season. Kyle Rizzi, Derek Ciernia, and Tom Simonson each added two RBIs with Simonson striking his first homerun of the year. Kenny Kolquist added one RBI to the Saints tally by batting 2 for 5 and walking once. The final tally was 20-5 in favor of the Saints.
Day break on Saturday marked the commencement of the scheduled double-header between Saint Scholastica and Northwestern. The first game of the day started at noon in St. Paul with sophomore Mark Moriarty taking the hill for the Saints. Taking on the Saints was Northwestern sophomore Josh Peterson. The Saints were able to jump out in front with three runs in the top of the first once again and this was again enough to secure another Saint Scholastica victory. Moriarty worked 5 2/3 innings for the Saints allowing only one earned run and striking out nine Eagles. The Saints’ bats were able to rough up Peterson for eight runs, all earned, in only four innings of work. The Saints were led at the plate, once again, by Daryl Fuchihara who went two for two and hit his fourth home run of the season. Chad Weiss, Steve Kraushaar, and Luke Olin each had home runs for the Saints making the final score 12-1.
Game two of Saturday’s twin-billing marked the marquis match-up of the series with the Saints sending their ace Jake Eiler to the hill against Northwestern’s top pitcher Gabe Eikum. The two aces matched each other blow for blow until the top of the fourth inning. Luke Olin led off the forth inning with a single to left field. He was followed by Tom Simonson who hit a ground ball to the shortstop who forced out Olin at second base leaving Simonson at first with one out. Senior D.J. Lahti then hit the ball to the shortstop who made an error allowing Simonson to reach third base and leaving Lahti on first. Daryl Fuchihara hit a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield driving Simonson home from third. The situation then left Lahti at first with two outs and Keith Ritsche at the plate. Ritsche hit the ball to the Northwestern third baseman who committed an error keeping the inning alive for the Saints. Seth Harvey then came through with a big hit for the Saints by crushing a double to right centerfield driving home both Lahti and Ritsche driving the score to 3-0. This was more than enough run support for Eiler who worked all seven innings for the Saints allowing zero runs and striking out nine Eagles to pick up the win.
After the sweep of Northwestern the Saints moved their record up to 15-2 on the season and 3-0 in the UMAC. The Eagles dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in the UMAC. The Saints will continue their UMAC schedule with a three game series next weekend in Mankato, MN against Bethany Lutheran College.

Saints Open Conference Schedule
Saints Start 2005 Season Strong
One giant reason that the Saints have been able pile up the wins early this season has been through the solid work of the Saints pitching staff. The unquestioned leader of the Saints on the mound is senior Jake Eiler. Already this season Eiler has started four games for the Saints and has a record of 2-1. In 20.2 innings of work, Jake has struck out 21 batters while only walking three and compiling an ERA of 0.87. Eiler’s biggest pitching performance of the year came in the Saints biggest game of the year to this point. Jake was able to shut-out the 3rd Ranked St. Thomas Tommies for 8 innings before giving way to reliever Mark Moriarty in arguably the greatest St. Scholastica baseball game ever. Moriarty has also been a bright spot for the Saints in ’05 as he has compiled a 3-0 record starting two games and coming in as relief in two more. Another bright spot on the hill for the Saints has been Senior Joey Calaguire. Calaguire has appeared in four games for the Saints and started one, but that lone start was a beauty for St. Scholastica. On Thursday, March 24th Calaguire took the mound against previously unbeaten Westminster College. Calaguire then went to work by giving up only two hits while striking out nine batters with zero walks. At one point during that game Calaguire sat down 18 straight Westminster batters en route to the shut-out victory. The Saints have also been supported by good performances by fellow starters Ben Grams, Mark Erickson, and Keith Ritsche. So far this season, in 14 games, the Saints pitchers have allowed only 52 runs with only 23 being earned runs. A pitching staff like that will win a lot of games.
The Saints have been no slouches at the plate either. The leader of the Saints at the plate has been senior shortstop Kenny Kolquist. Kenny has started all 14 games for the Saints and has compiled a .385 average with one double, two triples, and one homerun. Also striking the ball well at the plate has been seniors Tom Simonson and D.J. Lahti. Simonson is hitting .383 with five doubles and two triples while Lahti is batting .347 with four doubles and is leading the team in homeruns with two. Simonson and Lahti are both threats on the base paths as well as Simonson has three stolen bases and Lahti has four while neither have been caught stealing. Sophomore Chad Weiss has been solid at the plate when he gets his chances. Weiss has played in nine games and started only six, yet he has compiled a .462 batting average with two doubles, three triples, and one homerun. He has also accumulated eight RBIs. Fellow sophomore Daryl Fuchihara has also made the most of his opportunities at the plate by batting .417 with two doubles and six RBIs while playing in nine games and starting seven. Sophomore second baseman Brandon Swartz has played in all 14 games thus far and is hitting only .194 but is leading the team with 10 walks and is fifth on the team with a .412 on base percentage. So far in 2005, the Saints hitters have pounded in 119 runs in 14 games and as a team they are hitting .344. Who wouldn’t want to pitch for a team that provides that kind of run support?
Thus has been the story to this point in the 2005 college baseball season. The Saints have had many different players step up when they were needed, as well as, strong veteran leadership from very consistent performers. As the Saints enter their conference schedule tonight against Northwestern look for these trends to continue as the team looks to claim a ninth straight regular season UMAC title.
