Saints Drop Tommies 2-1 to Take Game One!

The Saint Scholastica Saints scored 2 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take down the nationally ranked St. Thomas Tommies. The Saints were led by the superb pitching performance of starter Jake Eiler who pitched eight innings of shut-out ball before giving way to sophomore Mark Moriarty for the start of the ninth inning. The Tommies were able to take a one run lead in the top of the ninth off of Moriarty but he was able to prevent further damage and the Saints entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 1-0. Sophomore second baseman Brandon Swartz led off the ninth with a single. Tom Simonson then struck out on a tough outside pitch that the umpire had been giving to the pitcher's all night long. That brought up D.J. Lahti with one out and Swartz on first. Lahti had a great at bat and worked the Tommies pitcher for a walk. This brought up Eiler to the plate with the tying run on second and the potential winning run on first. Eiler was able to come through with a huge hit (BFH) for the Saints by smashing a double into the gap that was able to bring home Swartz and Lahti giving the game to the Saints. Saint Scholastica improved their record to 3-0 on the season while the No. 3 ranked Tommies fell to 1-2 following the extra inning thriller. Game Two of the scheduled seven-inning doubleheader is currently underway at the Metrodome, check back with CSSBaseball.blogspot.com for the latest results and stats on the St. Thomas series.
