Saints Sweep Royals

The St. Scholastica Saints Baseball Team completed their sweep of the Bethel University Royals by winning the second game of the doubleheader at the Metrodome by the score of 7-5. The Saints sent Senior Mark Moriarty to the hill in the second game of the doubleheader and the Saints offense was able to put up seven runs in order to seal the victory for St. Scholastica. The win moved the Saints season record to 2-0 on the season as the Royals to 0-2.

This afternoon at the HHH Metrodome the St. Scholastica Saints Baseball Team defeated the Bethel University Royals by the score of 12-1 in the first game for both teams here in 2007. The Saints were led on the mound be Senior Keith Ritsche who didn't allow a run while on the hill and earned his first win of the season. Fellow Senior Mark Erickson also threw for the Saints and shut down the Royals by allowing only one. The same two teams are gearing up for Game 2 of the doubleheader coming up shortly as St. Scholastica will send another Senior Mark Moriarty to the mound for the start. Opening Day 2007 has arrived for the St. Scholastica Saints Baseball Team as they are traveling down I-35 to Minneapolis where they will take on the Bethel University Royals in a double-header at 3:45 and 5:45 PM at the HHH Metrodome. These games will be the first two games of the season for both team and will both be BROADCAST LIVE on AM 560 The Fan in the Duluth area and over the internet through The Fan's Website. Be sure to tune in as the Saints face off against the Royals this afternoon from the Metrodome!

2006 Season In The Books

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The Saints won their first game of the Tournament against host University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, but later fell to the number one seed Ripon and again to in-state rival St. Thomas on Saturday.

Saints In NCAA Tournament

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team received a bid into the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament for the second consecutive year. The Saints will be a four seed in the Stevens Point Regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Saints will face the number 5 seeded University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers in the opening 9:00 AM game of the Regional.

The Saints were undoubtedly hurt by the losses to MIAC foes St. Olaf and St. Thomas who both received higher seeds in the same Stevens Point Regional.

Saints Move Into UMAC Championship

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team advanced all the way into the 2006 UMAC Championship Game by defeating both the University of Minnesota-Morris and Northland College by scores of 15-4 and 17-1 on Thursday at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

In the first game of the day for St. Scholastica Senior Luke Olin etched his name into the NCAA Division III Record Book when he struck an 8th inning triple against Minnesota-Morris. The triple was Olin's 14th of the season, breaking the single season record of 13 set by Tom Mohl of Marietta College in Ohio in 1982. Mohl's 13 triples were over 63 games. Olin's record was set in his 39th game of the season.

The two wins increased the Saints 2006 record to 36-4 on the season and moved CSS even closer to a second consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament bid.

Tommies Cool Off Saints

The St. Thomas Tommies rolled into Duluth on Sunday morning looking to avenge to early season losses to the St. Scholastica Saints. A four-run first inning for the Tommies off of the Saints Mark Moriarty gave St. Thomas a lead that they would never relenquish.

Moriarty settled down after that rocky first and held the Tommies scoreless for the next four innings as the Saints offense tried to cut into the Tommies lead. In the bottom of the third inning, CSS was able to do just that when Mike Lewis knocked in Luke Olin and Daryl Fuchihara reached first on an error as Keith Ritsche scampered home. This left the Saints looking up from a 4-2 deficit.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Tommies were able to get to Moriarty again when Sean Young knocked in Matt Pexa, and Jordan Roering hit a ground ball single up the middle scored Mike Moran stretching the Tommies lead to 6-2.

The Saints answered right back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Freshman Jake Gaub knocked in Steve Kraushaar with a single through the right side of the infield bringing the score to 6-3.

Freshman phenom Adian Kummet releived Moriarty in the top of the sixth inning and worked the final four innings with out allowing the Tommies to get another run across while allowing only two hits and striking out one. Moriarty finished the game having worked five innings while allowing seven hits and six runs and striking out two.

The Saints offense was only able to muster one more run when Freshman Seth Engberg scored on a Chad Weiss double to left center. This brought the final tally to 6-4 in favor of St. Thomas.

The loss dropped the Saints to 34-4 on the 2006 season with the UMAC playoffs starting this weekend at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Saints could only face the Tommies again if the two teams both advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team finished off the UMAC portion of their 2006 regular season schedule by absolutely stomping the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars in a doubleheader Saturday at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

The three game sweep of Morris left the Saints at 34-3 overall and an unblemished 21-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The Saints outscored the Cougars 39-4 in the three games played this weekend at the Wade and gave the team momentum going into Sunday's National Game of the Week in NCAA Division III against the nationally ranked St. Thomas Tommies.

The Saints will be looking to stay unblemished in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and keep momentum rolling into the conference playoffs and eventually the NCAA Division III Regionals.

Saints Clinch UMAC

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Bethany Lutheran College by defeating the Vikings 5-0 and 3-2 in front of 85 dedicated fans at Wade Stadium. The wins pushed the Saints record to 31-3 overall and 18-0 in the UMAC, which clinched the regular season UMAC title once again for St. Scholastica.

The Saints put the ball in good hands to start game one of the doubleheader when they sent junior right-hander Mark Moriarty to the hill in search of his team leading 7th win. The Saints were able to provide all the runs Moriarty would need in the first inning when Keith Ritsche drove in Chad Weiss for the first run of the game. The Saints later added one run in the third and three more in the fifth giving Moriarty a 5-0 lead to work with. This was more than enough for the dominating pitcher. Moriarty worked six innings of shut-out baseball while scattering three hits and striking out 10 Vikings. Offensively, Ritsche had two RBIs, Luke Olin and Mike Lewis each added one RBI, and Brandon Swartz finished 2 for 3 in the game.

In game two, the Saints sent Chad Weiss to the mound, who pitched a solid six innings of three hit ball, allowing two runs, only one earned, in picking up his third win of the season. In the seventh, Weiss was releived by freshman phenom Adian Kummet who worked a scoreless inning, while striking out two, in picking up his second save of the season.

The Saints scored all three of their runs in the first inning when Daryl Fuchihara hit a one-out double. Luke Olin then struck a single that put runners on the corners for Keith Ritsche who knocked in both runners with a triple. Brandon Swartz then hit a deep fly ball that allowed Ritsche to tag up from third driving the Saints lead to 3-0.

St. Scholastica will take to the field again next Friday and Saturday against the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars in their final UMAC games of the year. Then again on Sunday in a huge match-up against the 10th ranked St. Thomas Tommies of the MIAC. Saints Rally For Win

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team was has held at bay for 8 1/3 innings by Bethany Lutheran College's junior hurler Brady Grohs who pitched masterfully over 8 1/3 innings. Grohs allowed just three hits and one run while striking out five before giving way to the Vikings closer sophomore Ben Rubenking who walked two Saints batters and allowed three hits and three runs, including a two-run single by Chad Weiss who tied the game and a game winning RBI single by Brandon Swartz. The Saints won the UMAC game by the score of 4-3 in front of 104 fans at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

The Saints started the game by sending Keith Ritsche to the hill, who is currently tied for the team lead in wins. Ritsche pitched well, allowing three runs, two of them earned, walking two and striking out five over six innings of work. Ritsche was releived by Ben Grams with the Saints trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning. Grams worked the rest of the way without allowing a hit over the final three innings of work. Grams picked up the win to run his record to 2-0 on the 2006 season.

Junior Brandon Swartz

The Saints offense was held at bay through eight innings, entering the bottom of the ninth inning trailing the Vikings 3-0, that's when the magic returned to CSS's bats. Keith Ritsche led off the bottom of the ninth by grounding out to the shortstop, giving the Saints just two out to manufacture three runs. That brought Mike Lewis to the plate, with one out, who sharply singled between the third baseman and the shortstop. The Vikings then changed pitchers and the Saints sent red hot Steve Kraushaar to the dish with one out and Weiss on first. Kraushaar walked and Nick Lee was tabbed to pinch hit for Sean Tracy. Lee fouled out the first baseman, which left the Saints trailing 3-0 with two outs and runners on first and second. Kyle Rizzi then was sent to the plate to pinch hit for Kyle Wojtysiak. Rizzi then singled through the right side of the infield loading the bases for Grant Eller. Eller then walked scoring Lewis and bringing the deficit to two with the bases still loaded and Chad Weiss coming to bat. Weiss then struck a hard hit single up the middle that scored two runs and tied the game at 3. Second baseman Brandon Swartz then came to the plate with runners at first and second with the chance to be the hero. Swartz came through with a huge hit scoring Eller and sending St. Scholastica to a 4-3 UMAC victory.

The Saints will take on the Vikings again Saturday at noon in a doubleheader at Wade Stadium. The Saints will enter the game on a nine-game winning streak and a 30-3 overal record as well as 17-0 in the UMAC. The Vikings are now 13-19 overall and 9-7 in the UMAC. Please come on out to the Wade to cheer on the Saints!

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team will take on the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings this afternoon at 2:00 PM at Wade Stadium in Duluth, MN in a Upper Midwest Athletic Conference battle. The Saints enter the game on an 8-game winning streak and a 29-3 overall record. The Vikings will make the trip up to the Wade carrying a 13-18 overall record and 9-6 in the UMAC.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team completed their weekend sweep over the Northwestern College Eagles by defeated them by the score of 5-1 at Wade Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman pitcher Adian Kummet took to the hill for the Saints and pitched masterfully on an absolutely beautiful afternoon in Duluth, MN. Kummet pitched 6 1/3 innings of shutout baseball while striking out 9 and walking only 2. Ben Grams took over for Kummet with one out and one runner on in the 7th inning and easily worked out of the jam before giving the Eagles only run in the 8th inning. Eric Hagen relieved Grams in the 8th and worked the rest of the way without allowing a hit. The win improved Kummet's record to 6-0 on the season tying him with junior Keith Ritsche and junior Mark Moriarty of the team lead in wins.

Offensively, the Saints were led by centerfielder Chad Weiss who went had a team high 3 hits and scored 1 run. Catcher Mike Lewis went 2-4 in the game and drove in 2 runs. Ritsche and firstbaseman Sean Tracy added 1 RBI each en route to the CSS victory.

The win improves St. Scholastica's record to 29-3 overall and 16-0 in the UMAC. It also gives the Saints a 6 game cushion over the Eagles in the conference standings. The Saints will take to the field again next Friday, April 28th against Bethany Lutheran College at historic Wade Stadium as they look to hit the 30 win plateau yet again in team history and stay undefeated in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Saints Take First Two From Eagles

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team took the first two games of their three game series with the Northwestern College Eagles on Saturday afternoon. The wins gave the Saints a strong hold on the lead in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference with the Saints now holding a 4 game lead over the Eagles with just seven conference games left. The two teams will meet again Sunday at noon at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

The St. Scholastica faithful were out in full-force for Saturday's doubleheader at the Wade as bright sunshine and warm weather treated fans and players alike. The Saints were led in game one of the series by Junior hurler Keith Ritsche who came into the day with a 5-1 record and a 2.95 ERA, Ritsche was able to improve on both. He threw six innings of shut-out baseball before giving way to Mark Erickson out of the bullpen who gave up the Eagles lone run in the top of the 7th inning. In the 7-1 CSS victory, Ritsche picked up his team leading 6th win of the season as the Saints improved to 26-3 overall and 13-0 in the UMAC.

Game two of the scheduled doubleheader proved to be more of the same from the CSS pitching staff as another Junior star on the mound Mark Moriarty took the hill. Moriaty entered the game with a 5-1 record and only a 1.42 ERA. The St. Scholastica fan base was energized to see Moriarty improve on his team leading 65 strikeouts, and he did not dissapoint. Moriarty threw shutout inning after shutout inning en route to breaking former Saint standout Ben Sickler's record for strikeouts in a game. The Saints offense did their part by scoring 3 runs for a 3-0 CSS victory. The win put Moriary right back into a tie for the team lead in wins with Ritsche as both are now 6-1 on the season. The win leaves the Saints at 27-3 overall and 14-0 in the UMAC.

The same two teams will face off again Sunday at noon for a scheduled 9-inning contest. Clash of UMAC Leaders Postponed

The much anticipated match-up of the #1 and #2 teams in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference will have to wait one more day as Friday's game between the Saint Scholastica Saints and the Northwestern College Eagles has been postponed due to rain in Duluth.

The two teams will face off on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Eagles and Saints will then finish off their three game series with one nine-inning contest on Sunday with the first pitch schedule for noon.

The Duluth Huskies Baseball Club will have the concession stand fully operational for all three games this weekend featuring a large menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, candy, nachos, soft pretzels, hot chocolate, coffee, soda, and Powerade. Come on down to the Wade to support the Saints as they look to put a stranglehold on yet another UMAC conference championship!

Saints Open The Wade

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team opened the home half of their schedule by taking on the Northland College Lumberjacks in a UMAC doubleheader at historic Wade Stadium in Duluth.

The Saints were led in Game One of the doubleheader by Junior hurler Mark Moriarty who took the mound in search of his 5th win the season. He was able to pick up on the heels of a four hit, two run performance, during which he struck out 10 Lumberjacks.

Game Two was highlighted by the pitching performance of Freshman Adian Kummet who was also looking to pick up his 5th win of the season. Kummet was also able to join the 5 win club by allowing only one run on five hits while striking out four Lumberjacks. The game of the doubleheader also saw the first homerun of the season at Wade Stadium as Steve Kraushaar took a Lumberjack pitch deep over the right field fence just to the right of the scoreboard. Kraushaar's shot highlighted a 4-6 day over the two games where he scored three runs and drove in two. In his past eight games Kraushaar, the reigning UMAC player of the week, has been red hot hitting a robust .529 with seven doubles, two triples, and one homerun.

The Saints will take to the Wade Stadium field again on Friday and Saturday for a three-game UMAC series against the Northwestern College Eagles. We hope to have a full-house at the Wade for all three games as the top-two UMAC teams face off in a battle that will likely determine the eventual conference champion. Saints Finish Off Presentation

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team finished off their series against the Presentation College Saints with a 15-3 thumping of the host team. St. Scholastica pounded out 22 hits in the series finale.

Saints Back on Winning Track

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team got back in the win column on Friday, April 14th by taking the first two games of a three game UMAC series against the Presentation College Saints in Aberdeen, SD.

The Saints were led in the first game of the series by junior hurler Eric Hagen who carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning. Offensively, CSS was finally able to break through against the Presentation pitching with a five-run fifth inning that game Hagen a 6-0 and was more than enough for the Saints pitching staff to seal the win. After giving up just one run on one hit, a solo homerun, in the fifth, Hagen gave way to Joey Zanni and Adian Kummet who finished off the win giving up just one more run en route to a 7-2 victory for CSS. The win imporoved Hagen's record to 4-0 on the season.

The Saints bats really came alive in game two by scoring in six out of the seven innings including a five-run second inning that saw seven CSS batters take to the plate. Steve Kraushaar went 3 for 3 in the game with 2 RBI and Nick Lee also added 3 hits for 4 RBI. Junior Chad Weiss took the Presentation pitcher deep with a two-run homerun in the second inning and Mike Lewis also added a solo shot in the sixth. Jake Wendland picked up the win for the Saints by throwing three innings of shut-out baseball allowing only 2 hits. Wendland improved to 2-0 on the season with the Saints 19-7 victory.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team had their 14 game winning streak snapped when the St. Olaf College Oles took both games of a doubleheader in Northfield, MN on Thursday afternoon.

The Oles took game one bay the score of 3-2 by stroking a base hit in their final at bat to drive in the winning run.

The Saints then fell behind early in game two by giving up 7 runs in the second inning and were never able to fully climb back out of that hole eventually falling again to the Oles, by the score of 10-8.

Saints Sweep Knights

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team ran their record to 19-1 and 6-0 in the UMAC by sweeping the Martin Luther College Knights in three games over the weekend.

CSS took down Martin Luther by scores of 7-2 and 8-0 in a doubleheader on Saturday and completed the weekend sweep by downing the Knights 18-1 on Sunday.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team will be looking to avenge their lone UMAC loss of the 2005 Season when they take on the Martin Luther College Knights this Saturday and Sunday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday followed by one 9 inning contest on Sunday.

The Saints will enter the contest ranked number 5 nationally in NCAA Division III with a dominant 16-1 record and being 3-0 in the UMAC. The Knights will play their first home game of the season and will bring in a record of 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the UMAC.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team opened play in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference by sweeping the Crown College Purple Storm in three games on Saturday. The Saints (16-1, 3-0) and the Purple Storm were forced to play an uncommon triple-header on Saturday as a result of a less than ideal weather forcast for Sunday.

The Saints opened the day with a dominating pitching performance as Mark Moriarty and Nate Hill combined for a no-hit shut-out as the Saints offense provided 8 runs in support en route to a 10-0 win.

Game two brought Ben Gramms to the hill for the Saints and another strong pitching performance was turned in as Gramms didn't allow a run while picking up the win in another Saints shut-out, this time 10-0.

Saints Move Up In Rankings

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team moved up to number 5 in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Baseball poll released on March 27th. This is the highest CSS has ever been ranked in an NCAA Division III poll. The Saints were able to move up this high as a result of their red-hot 13-1 start including wins over several ranked opponents.

The Saints are looking up in the latest rankings at number 1 ranked New Jersey, number 2 Wooster, OH, number 3 Emory, GA, and number 4 ranked Cortland State, NY.

Saints Enjoying Fast Start

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team is off to a tremendous start to the 2006 NCAA season. Through their first 14 games the CSS Saints are 13-1. The Saints have played some of the toughest competition in NCAA Division III and have proven themselves worthy of playing with the big boys. The 17th ranked Saints have already defeated number 3 Wartburg College, number 7 Alvernia College, and number 27 St. Thomas University with their only loss coming in the first game of a doubleheader against Alvernia.

The Saints will again take the field on Friday, March 31st in Waconia, MN against Crown College as they look to continue their 2006 domination into the UMAC season.

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team finished off its annual Florida Spring Break trip by sweeping the Hilbert College Hawks and the Kenyon College Lords in two doubleheaders and by defeating Mount Saint Vincent College. Through the whole Florida trip the Saints went 9-1 and improved to 13-1 overall.

Saints Roll Over Principia

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team continued it's great start to 2006 by rolling over the Principia College Panthers by the score of 10-3 on Tuesday in Ft. Pierce, FL.

The Saints were able to gain the W by means of a 6-run 4th inning that put the game out of reach. Luke Olin and Daryl Fuchihara led the Saints offensively with each getting a single, double, and triple and 2 RBIs. Matt Tuominen and Blake Eller each added two hits for the Saints with Tuominen knocking in 3 and Eller scoring 3 times.

Chad Weiss got the win for the Saints by allowing zero runs on two hits while striking out six.

Saints Gain Split

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Team gained a split of their doubleheader with ninth-ranked Alvernia College by winning the second game of the twin-billing.

The Alvernia College Crusaders were able to take the first game behind the strong pitching of Jason Ziegler who threw a four-hit shutout en route to a 4-0 victory. Keith Ritsche took the hill for the Saints and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings of work while taking his first loss of the season.

In game two the Saints were led by the arm of Mark Moriarty who threw a four hit shutout of his own as the Saints won 5-0. Moriarty finished with 10 strikeouts and improved to 2-0 on the season.

With the win the Saints moved to 7-1 in 2006 and are an impressive 5-1 against nationally ranked opponents.

Saints Stay Hot, Sweep Westminster

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team continued their hot start by sweeping the Westminster College Titans to kick off their Florida schedule. The Saints moved to 6-0 on the heels of two extra-inning victories.

In game one, Senior Luke Olin proved to be the hero with an RBI single in the top of the ninth that scored Blake Eller with the winning run in the 6-5 victory. The Saints were able to force the game into extra's when Mike Lewis scored in the seventh inning on a wild pitch. Freshman Adian Kummet moved to 2-0 on the season by throwing three innings in relief of Mark Erickson. For the game, Olin had three hits and two RBIs while Eller and Junior Brandon Swartz each added two hits for the Saints.

The Saints took the second game of the doubleheader by the score of 7-6 after Luke Olin led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Daryl Fuchihara. Eric Hagen picked up his first win of the season by giving up one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief of Ben Grams. Blake Eller was an offensive star for CSS by going 4-5 with five stolen bases while Olin was 2-3 with three runs scored.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team left on Friday, March 10th on thier annual bus trip to the Gulf Coast for the great state of Florida. The Saints are scheduled to play ten games in a twelve day span against teams such as Westminster College, Alvernia College, Principia College, State University of New York-New Paultz, Kenyon College, and Mount St. Vincent College. The team will kick off their action starting today against the Westminster College Titans when the teams meet for two games starting at 9:00 AM.

Saints Sweep Tommies

The Saint Scholastica Saints moved to 4-0 on the season on the heels of two last-inning rallies against the 27th ranked St. Thomas Tommies. The Saints scored two runs in the top of the eight to break a 3-3 tie in game one sending CSS to a 5-3 victory. In game two, the Saints trailed 2-1 going into the final at-bat, but the Saints came through with a one out, bases loaded double that drove in two giving the Saints a 3-2 victory.

Saints Prepare For Tommies

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team is coming off of an impressive two-game sweep of third ranked Wartburg College last week and has been working even harder for another tough outing against another nationally ranked opponent and fierce rival, the St. Thomas Tommies. The Tommies are ranked #27 nationally and will open their season on Tuesday against the Saints.

St. Thomas is returning 17 varisty players from last season's team that won both the MIAC regular season and post season titles. The Tommies also advanced to the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament where they were knocked out by eventual National Champion the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Last season, the Saints and Tommies face each other three times with the Tommies taking two out of three. They met in a doubleheader in the Metrodome on March 14, 2005 with the Saints taking the first game 2-1 in 9 innings and the Tommies taking the night-cap by the score of 7-5. The two teams met for the final time on April 24, 2005 at St. Thomas's home field with the Tommies taking it to the Saints by the score of 10-4.

Tuesday's games will mark the first of four that the two teams will play during the regular season of 2006. The Saints and Tommies will meet again on May 7th in Wade Stadium for another doubleheader that will mark the end of the Saints 2006 regular season campaign.

The battle begins on Tuesday, March 7th at 5:00 PM in the Metrodome. Saints fans should make it down early to cheer on their 17th ranked St. Scholastica Saints in, already, one of their biggest series's of the season!

Moriarty Leads Saints to Sweep!

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team completed a season opening sweep of third ranked Wartburg College behind the arm of Junior Mark Moriarty (1-0). Moriarty threw a complete game, one-hit shut-out, while striking out 11 and walking only one.

Offensively, the Saints were led by Senior Luke Olin who hit a two-run triple in the first inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sophomore Steve Kraushaar.

Saints Picked to Win UMAC

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team was once again picked by the coaches of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference to claim the 2006 Championship. The Saints have won the last nine consecutive UMAC titles.

The Saints earned 49 points and seven first place votes. Northland College was picked to finish second with 40 points, while Martin Luther College and Bethany Lutheran College tied for third, with Martin Luther College receiving the other first place vote.

The Saints will be returning five position players and four starting pitchers from a team that was 36-7-1 overall and 19-1-1 in the UMAC last season.

Northwestern is picked fifth, followed by the University of Minnesota-Morris, Crown College, and Presentation College.

The Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball team kicked off their 2006 campaign with the annual "Hit-athon" on Sunday, January 29th. The 2005 Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team was honored during the Annual Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner which took place during Alumni Weekend. During 2005 the Saints finished the season 36-7 and advaned to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history. The team also finished the season ranked 14th in the nation in NCAA Division III.

Nyquist and Bjerken Imortalized as Hall of Famers

The highlight of the 2005 fall season for the Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team was undoubtedly the annual Alumni Weekend during which Brett Nyquist, from Duluth Central High School, and Nick Bjerken, from North St. Paul High School, were inducted into the Saint Scholastica Saints Baseball Hall of Fame.

Brett Nyquist graduated from Saint Scholastica in 2002 and is the Saints all-time leader in ERA (2.06) and is third in both career strikeouts and wins. Nyquist was drafted in the 13th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft by the Montreal Expos. Brett has been invited to attend the Washington Nationals minor league spring training next spring.

Nick Bjerken is a 2003 graduate of Saint Scholastica and is currently in the top ten in eleven different pitching and hitting categories including wins (2nd), innings pitched (4th), hits (8th), and RBIs (8th). Bjerken was an All-American in 2003.

Saints Fall League Comes to a Close

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team wrapped up their fall baseball practice in early October with the annual Championship Series of the Saints Fall League (SFL). The 2005 SFL Championship was brought home, once again, by Black.

The Saints will now hunker down into their schooling for the winter while keeping in shape by hitting the weights or running on the track. The Saints will have high expectations entering into the 2006 spring season.

Saints in the Northwoods League

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team is well represented once again this season in the Northwoods League. The Northwoods League is an SCBA (Summer Collegiate Baseball Association) sanctioned summer baseball league comprised of the top college players from across the nation. All players in this league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid (this preserves their NCAA eligibility).

Each team in the Northwoods League is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.

This summer the Saints are represented on a number of Northwoods League rosters. The Brainerd Blue Thunder, Duluth Huskies, Madison Mallards, and Thunder Bay BorderCats have each had a member of the Saints college team on their field during this season. The players that are representing Saint Scholastica in this league are Chad Weiss (Brainerd), Daryl Fuchihara (Duluth), Keith Ritsche (Duluth), Mark Moriarty (Madison), and Brandon Swartz (Thunder Bay).

The action in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday left only four teams standing, with Chapman University getting eliminated when they fell to the State University of New York-Cortland by the score of 15-12 and Rowan University leaving after falling to Wartburg College by the score of 8-6. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the Championship Game by defeating The College of Wooster 10-7 to become the only undefeated team left in the tournament. Whitewater Advances to World Series

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship on Sunday afternoon by defeating the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a re-match of the WIAC Championship from a week earlier. The Warhawks were able to jump out in from of the Pointers by putting up four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Warhawks then added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to run their lead up to 7-0. The Pointers were able to muster three runs in the top of the sixth, but that was all that they could put together as the Warhawks cuised the rest of the way to a 7-3 victory and punched their ticket to the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships starting May 27th in Fox Cities, WI.

Following the Championship game of the Whitewater Regional the tournament coordinators named the 2005 Whitewater Regional All-Tournament Team which featured one Saint Scholastica Saint. With the addition of the the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to the field of the 2005 NCAA Divison III National Baseball Championship six of the eight teams have been decided. Qualifying on Sunday for the eight-team, double elimination tournament that will be held May 27-31 at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis., were Hampden-Sydney College (Va.), State University of New York-Cortland, The College of Wooster (Ohio), University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wartburg College (Iowa). Chapman University (Calif.), which won the event in 2003, clinched its spot in the finals on Saturday (May 21). The final two teams of the event will be decided on Monday as Alvernia College (Pa.) and Rowan University (N.J.) play for the championship of the Boyertown Regional while Trinity College (Conn.) and Wheaton College (Mass.) battle for the championship of the Harwich Regional.

Saints Season Comes to a Close

The Saint Scholastica Saints ended their 2005 season Saturday afternoon when they fell to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers by the score of 18-3 in the second elimination game of the Whitewater Regional. The Saints had a great 2005 season that saw the team claim their second ever berth into the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. We would like to thank each of the nine seniors who brought this team back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999: Kenny Kolquist, Joe Calagurie, DJ Lahti, Dan Lanasa, Jake Eiler, Tom Simonson, Ryan Bruns, Steve Henry, and Derek Ciernia. Thank you guys for four great years of Saints baseball, you will be missed.

The Saint Scholastica Saints and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers resumed their game from last night with the score 3-1 CSS at the end of the 3rd inning. The Saints were able to add a couple of insurance runs Friday morning and Jake Eiler resumed where he left off last night to hold the WIAC Champion, Pointers to only two more runs. The final score of the game was 5-3 in favor of the Saints. With the win Saint Scholastica moves on to play the number 1 team in the nation, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks at 4:00 today in Whitewater, WI. Wisconsin-Steven Point moved to the losers bracket where they defeated St.Thomas at 1:00 PM today by the score of 2-0 knocking the Tommies out of the NCAA Tournament.

The 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament got underway this morning at 11:00 AM in Whitewater, WI with the #2 seeded University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeating the #3 seeded University of St. Thomas by the score of 7-4. Saints Preparing For NCAA Tournament

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team has been busy this week preparing for their second appearance in the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. The Saints will open the 2005 Tournament in Whitewater, Wisconsin in the Whitewater Regional against the #1 seeded University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The game is scheduled to start at 2:30 PM on Thursday, May 19th following the #3/#4 match-up, which pits the #2 seeded University of Wisconsin-Whitewater against the #3 seeded University of St. Thomas.

There is no doubt that the Saints will face an up hill battle if they plan on winning the Regional tournament to advance to the Division III World Series, according to the most recent ABCA NCAA Division III Poll the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater enters the tournament ranked #1 in the nation, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will face the Saints as the #10 team in the nation, and the University of St. Thomas will enter the tournament ranked at #19 nationally. Saint Scholastica will enter tournament play as the lowest ranked team in their regional at #26 nationally. The Saints will; however, enter the tournament with the least number of loses among the four teams in the Whitewater Regional. I also don't believe that it would come as much of a shock if the Saints were able to suprise a couple of teams in the regional tournament and ended up advancing on to the 2005 NCAA Division III World Series! Good luck Saints!

Saints Get NCAA Bid

For the first time since 1999, the Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team received a bid to the 2005 NCAA Baseball Tournament. The Saints will play in the Whitewater Region hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Saints are just one of 42 teams that will play for the 2005 NCAA Divison III National Championship. The Tournament begins May 19 and the teams in each region will play in a double-elimination format for the chance to move on the Championship Bracket May 27-31 in Appleton, Wisconsin. The Saints received the #4 seed in the Whitewater region and will face the #1 seed, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the first round of the tournament. Saints Beat Cougars in Opening Round

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team defeated the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars by the score of 7-1 Friday afternoon in the opening round of the UMAC Tournament. The Saints actually trailed 1-0 going in to the bottom of the eighth inning, but were sparked by a 2-run homerun by Chad Weiss and never looked back. The Saints will now advance to play the Northland College LumberJacks Saturday in the second round of the double-elimination UMAC Tournament.

The Saints have reached their highest rank of the 2005 season by checking in this week at Number 26. The Saints were previously ranked at Number 30 during the poll taken on Monday, April 11th. Seniors' Farewell

The Saints Baseball team is losing nine seniors after this season. They are: Kenny Kolquist, Joe Calagurie, DJ Lahti, Dan Lanasa, Jake Eiler, Tom Simonson, Ryan Bruns, Steve Henry, and Derek Ciernia. These guys are all great players and the team will miss them. Many have said that they will be very sad to leave such a great group of guys behind to start a new part of their lives without them. They all look forward to keeping in touch, and meeting up with each other later. All of the guys feel really sad that their baseball careers are coming to an end because it has been a family for them for the past four years. Many are finding jobs or will start jobs soon after graduation, others are taking a year off before grad or medical school. I think that they will all do great in whatever they decide to pursue next.

Many of guys have said that their best memories are not certain things, but rather the people and the events that have happened. All have said that it has been the time of their lives with the guys on the team and all the fun times that they have had together. Another has said that it is great to know that the alumni keep up with how well the Saints are doing and let them know how they feel about the team and know that they have the alumni support. Some have enjoyed the bus rides, hanging out, and playing Madden football; while others have made best friends that feel like family. Many of them couldn't just single out one memory as everyday made it a great time.

I know this is a weird little article but I just had to write this one, the one on how cold it is (sometimes) to play at the Wade Stadium. Many of the first games of the season at the Wade you will see almost everyone with their winter jackets, mittens, and blankets to keep them warm while they sit and watch their favorite team play. I know I freeze to death when I am just sitting there so I started to wonder, "If I am freezing just sitting here what about the guys down on the field, they have got to be cold to?" I asked a few players their thoughts on playing in the cold and many of them said that it's not to terribly bad. All said that the guys are used to it by now and that you just have to maintain focus on the game and block out the cold. Some said you have to keep a positive attitude, and others said you just have to toughen up and play through it.

Since it is cold up here in Duluth, you sometimes wonder how the guys stay healthy and not hurt. The injured list is very, very small right now which is very good. The team has a very good lifting and conditioning program that they stick to in the off season and then it is modified depending on position during the regular season. They have two excellent trainers, Kim and Tom, to keep them healthy. The team does a lot of working out and eating right in order to be in shape to play such awesome ball.

Conference Play

The Saints Baseball team is part of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, or UMAC, and it has been getting better with every year. They really do not get a lot of tough competition on a regular basis. Many of the guys I have spoken with have said that it would be nice to be in a different conference or even just play some harder teams just to have more competition. Also, from a couple of guys who have played in the Northwoods League, they have realized that there isn't a big gap between the Division I players and the Saints players.

The Saints would like to have a little bit more competition but for the most part they are happy with what they do have. The team focuses on the game, or themselves, and the not the opponent, like Presentation vs St. Thomas. They only worry about the things that they can control. St. Scholastica plays 2-3-2 baseball and always gives their best.

Summer Baseball

I bet you all are wondering, "What do the Saints Baseball players do during the summer months?" Well there are quite a few options for them.

Some of the guys go play for the Northwoods Summer League. The Northwoods League is an SCBA sanctioned summer baseball league comprised of teams of the top college players from across the nation. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid (this preserves their NCAA eligibility). Each team is operated similar to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium. The guys playing this summer will be: Keith Ritsche and Daryl Fuchihara-Duluth Huskies, Mark Moriarty-Madison Mallards, Chad Weiss-Brainerd Blue Thunder.

If the guys don't play a summer league they split up and many of them go home and play in their hometown leagues. Many of those are less competitive and with older people. So even in the off season the guys are still playing ball and having fun.

Fall of 5D

It is very sad but true. The Baseball House, also known as Groves 5D, is gone. Betsy has decided that the apartment is to be given away to some other group. The new group is a bunch of incoming sophomore girls. Why Betsy would do this has everyone dumbfounded and a little upset. 5D has been a Saints Baseball tradition for 15 years. The players have many memories in that house and now it is gone.

I mean no offense to the boys that live there now, or in the past for that matter, but I really don't think that girls would want to live there as the Groves are not the finest on campus housing. The summer cleaning crew will have a lot to do now that it isn't the "baseball house" anymore. It is sad that the baseball boys won't have their house anymore, but they will be starting a new one, they just don't know when the new one will come into effect or where it will be on campus.

All in all, the guys are upset that a 15 year tradition is being shattered, but they will come back with a vengeance.

Record Breaking Saints End Regular Season With "W"

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team finished up their regular season schedule by defeating the Northland College LumberJacks Sunday afternoon at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Saints jumped out on the 'Jacks early with 5 runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Saints were also able to record their 14th shut-out of the season, breaking the NCAA Division III record set in 1999. The Saints also wrapped up their 9th consecutive UMAC Championship and will have the number 1 seed in the UMAC Conference Tournament starting this Thursday, May 12th. The Saints finish up the 2005 regular season with a record of 32-5 overall and 19-1 in the UMAC.

Saints Complete Sweep of Presentation

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team completed their three-game sweep of the Presentation College Saints by beating Presentation by a score of 8-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Saints were led by senior Steve Henry who played every position on the field, including pitching three innings. Saint Scholastica moved their record to 31-5 overall and 18-1 in the UMAC while Presentation fell to 7-31 overall and 1-20 in the UMAC. The Saint Scholastica Saints will wrap up their 2005 regular season schedule tomorrow at noon at Wade Stadium. The Saints will face Northland College in one nine-inning game and will finish the April 18th game which stand at 10-10 in the 9th inning. We'll see you at the Wade tomorrow at noon!

Saints Take Two From Presentation

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team took the first two games of the three game UMAC series with Presentation College on Friday afternoon at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Saints won the first game of the day 17-0 for their 13th shut-out of the season, tying the NCAA Division III record set in 1999 by Saint Scholastica and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Saints took game two by the score of 20-3 giving most of their regulars some rest for the most of the second game. After the wins the Saints move to 30-5 overall and 17-1 in the UMAC while Presentation falls to 7-30 overall and 1-19 in the UMAC. The win also gave Saint Scholastica 30 wins for the 7th straight season. The two teams will meet again Saturday at noon in one nine-inning contest at Wade Stadium! We'll see you out there!

With this being the last weekend of UMAC conference play, we thought we would give a quick update on the standings. With a wins in games against Presentation and Northland at Wade Stadium this weekend, the St Scholastica Saints can wrap up their 9th straight UMAC regular season championship. With a conference record of 15-1, the first-place Saints are once again the cream of the UMAC crop.

Unlike past years, though, there is a team breathing down their neck going into the last weekend of games. Martin Luther is in a close second behind CSS with a conference record of 15-3. Martin Luther is also responsible for the only blemish on the Saints record with a 2-1 victory over CSS last weekend at Wade Stadium. Martin Luther pitcher Brett Krause picked up the win with the 7-hit complete game. By doing so, Krause was named UMAC Pitcher of the Week last week.

Other than CSS and Martin Luther, no other team in the UMAC has an overall record above .500. But that doesn't mean that the UMAC tournament is anything but a cake walk. Already in the regular season, teams like Northland have shown that they can play with the top teams by playing CSS to a 10-10 tie before the game was called to darkness. While CSS is still the top team in the conference, the margin for error is starting to become smaller and smaller.

The UMAC tournament starts next Thursday, May 12th, in Ashland, WI.

Season Statistical Leaders

One would suspect that the team that is dominating the standings of a conference is also dominating statistically. This point couldn't be anymore the truth than with St. Scholastica and the UMAC conference. Heading into the last weekend of conference play, the Saints are utterly dominating every statistical catagory.

The Saints are hitting an astounding .386 in conference games. Having one or two players batting .400 is an impressive feat, but to have the entire team pushing to bat .400 is incredible. Also, the Saints are the only team in the conference that has taken more base on balls than strikeouts. Not only are they the only team, but by a 2 to 1 margin. During UMAC games, the Saints have walked 112 times while only striking out 52 times. The Saints are also the only team to have double digits in home runs with 16.

Things are much of the same on the mound. CSS has a team ERA of 1.12, which is over 3 runs lower than the next best. With a strikeout to walk ratio of 128 to 29, it is safe to say that the Saints pitching rotation has been nothing short of dominant.

The two leaders of that rotation has been senior Jake Eiler and junior Ben Grams. The two are a combined 8-0 in conference play with ERA's of 0.69 and 0.82, respectively. The most impressive stat is that the two has combined for 58 strikeouts while only walking 6 batters. While the UMAC might be catching up to the Saints, it is quite obvious they still have a way to go.

Saints in the Pros

The opportunity to play professional baseball is a privilage that few baseball players ever get to experience. Even if just for a day, baseball players of all levels would die to get a chance to play the game they love for a living. But for 11 former Saints baseball players, that dream has turned into a reality.

Starting with Leland Swenson signing a contract with the Texas Rangers organization in 2000, 11 former members of the CSS baseball program have signed professional baseball contracts. While none have made it to "the show", just being able to play the game professionally is quite an honor. Pitcher Brett Nyquist has been the highest selected Saints player when the Montreal Expos drafted him in the 13th round.

The amount of players signing professional contracts is proof of how the CSS baseball program has gained respect nationally. The credit for this dramatic turn around has to be attributed to Head Coach John Baggs ability to get top recruits to come to St. Scholastica. Without the ability to offer players scholarships, Baggs has still been able to turn CSS into a top-notch baseball program. He has also been able to give 11 players the opportunity to extend their baseball career into the professional level.

Daryl Fuchihara-Breakout Season

The most pleasant suprise for the 2005 Saints baseball team has been the hot bat being swung by sophomore OF-DH Daryl Fuchihara. A team that has such power hitters as D.J. Lahti and Tom Simonson, it is sort of a suprise that the 6'2" lefty from Thunder Bay, OT leads the Saints in almost every power catagory. In 73 AB, Fuch is hitting a team leading .438 with 5 home runs and 29 runs batted in.

In a three-game stretch against Northwestern in early April, Fuchihara went 6-8 with 4 HR and 12 RBI's. This included a 3-5 game where all three hits were home runs. This effort was good enough for the sophomore to earn UMAC player of the week honors.

The UMAC leader in slugging percentage and on-base percentage, Fuchihara has 2 more years to torment college pitchers. Let's just all hope that he doesn't get sick of doing that very thing to pitchers this year and help lead the Saints to a playoff bid this weekend.

The Last Lahti

Expectations would have been high for D.J. Lahti four years ago regardless of his last name. A freshman on a team whose outfield consisted of Greg Young, Josh Wettlaufer, and Nick Bjerken, Lahti was expected to make an immediate impact. Now throw in the fact that his two older brothers are members of the Saints Baseball Hall of Fame, D.J. might have been apt to buckle under such pressure

Fast forward 4 years and you can see Lahti did everything but buckle under the pressure. This senior captain is again one of the biggest threats at the plate in the Midwest Region. An All-American selection his sophomore year, Lahti entered this week's play with a .323 batting average, 4 home runs, and 32 runs batted in.

Those numbers complement a 12-year run of Lahti's producing for the baseball program. Oldest brother Steve was inducted into the hall of fame in 1999 after leading the Saints to their first 20-win season in 1995. Steve, along with Ben Stickler, was the first Saint baseball player to be named to the All-Region team. Steve is also one of the only Saints in history to have 100 or more hits, runs scored, and RBI's as a hitter and over 100 strikeouts as a pitcher.

Jeff Lahti was the 6th member of the Saints Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000. Jeff was a member of the 1999 team, which was the first to compete in the NCAA National Tournament. The 2B, named NCAA All-Region his senior year, finished his career in the top 5 in RBI's, hits, and runs scored.

Hopefully, the Saints can earn a bid into the NCAA National Tournament this season. If so, D.J. will have a chance to take the Saints to a place his brothers couldn't, to a national championship

Wade Stadium

With today's rain abbreviated double-header with St. Olaf completed, the Saints have only one more weekend of home games left this season. The final game of the season for the Saints at Wade Stadium takes place this Sunday at 12 p.m. against local rival Northland College. This marks the last game wearing Saints jerseys at "The Wade" for nine seniors on the roster. While old in appearance, Wade Stadium is still one of the nicest parks in Minnesota.

Built in 1940-41, Wade Stadium has been the host of many memorable baseball games. This list includes the 2000 NCAA Division III Super Regional. This was a best-of-three series between St. Scholastica and Bellevue University in Nebraska. While the Saints ended up losing the series 2 games to 1, Wade Stadium was vibrant including an attendance of 1,630 for game three.

Wade Stadium was on the verge of getting torn down in the 1990's when volunteers kept the 350,000 plus brick ball park up and running. Wade is now the home of not only CSS, but the Duluth Huskies and various high school and American Legion teams.

For those of you that have never attended a game at Wade Stadium, make sure to come to the final home games of the season for the Saints. The Stadium is truely a part of Duluth's history, and is a place any baseball fan will fall in love with.

Clutch Hitting

In a game that the Saints struggled to get timely hitting, Sophomore 2B Brandon Swartz delivered a much needed game winning single to lead the Saints to a 2-1 extra inning win over St. Olaf. The win kept the Saints in contension for a bid in the 2005 NCAA Division III playoffs.

In honor of Swartz's clutch hit, we thought we would take a look back at one of the biggest hits in Saints baseball history. It was in the 1999 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional where the Saints were in a 4-team double elimination tournament. After losing their opening round to UW-Oshkosh 6-5 in 11 innings, the Saints faced elimination against UW-Stevens Point. Trailing 3-0 in the 7th, the Saints tied the game on a 3-run double by Chris LePine.

The scored stayed that way until the Saints came up in the bottom of the 10th. With two outs and nobody on, Junior catcher Justin Harriman came to bat. Harriman, a future Saints baseball Hall of Famer, etched himself in Saints history with a walk-off home run. The home run gave the Saints a 4-3 win in their second straight extra inning game in the Midwest Regional.

Although the Saints would eventually lose another extra inning game to UW-Oshkosh to end their season, Harriman's home run will always be a part of the program's history. It established CSS as a program that can win at the national level.

Oles top Saints in Rain Shortened Game

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team fell to the St. Olaf College Oles in the second game of the scheduled doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Saints were able to jump out to a early 3-0 lead before the Oles were able to score 4 runs in the top of the fourth inning off of Saints starter Ben Grams. The Oles were able to hold on to the 4-3 lead before the game was called by the umpires because the heavy rain pelting the Wade Stadium field. After Thursday's doubleheader the Saints stand at 28-5 overall with two more games coming Friday afternoon against Presentation College in UMAC play.

A Thought From Freshmen

Coming near the end of a nearly forty game season, we talked to some of the freshman to see how their season went. I questioned the freshmen about their overall expectations coming into this years team. They expected a lot that happened throughout the season but also received a lot more than they had anticipated. The most common response was that the season was fun and they all learned a lot of new things. The freshmen were told that they were coming into a family and would get treated equally on the team. Coming in as a freshman you expect a lot of things but you only believe so much of what you hear. Not with this baseball team, everything you expect is ten times better than what it sounds like it will be.
The freshmen really enjoyed this team because it is okay to hang out with anyone on the team, you don’t just have to stick with other freshmen. This is what makes the baseball team a great family. Everyone gets along and has a fun time.
Some things the freshmen didn’t expect was to see weak pitching by mostly the conference teams they played. Also, they all had more fun at practice than they thought they would. They found it nice to go to class and have something to look forward to in the day, instead of thinking about practice as taking up three hours of their day. Freshmen Adam and Steve not only discovered their talents of baseball, but found their hidden talent of being the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich makers on the team.
Besides comments from the freshmen, I also got a few opinions about the freshmen from the upperclassmen. It was noted that they are a great group of guys who all work very hard. This group got beyond the freshmen classification very quickly. This means that they learned and advanced their skills in baseball very fast and you couldn’t tell who the newcomers on the team were. The upperclassmen are glad to report that the future of the Saints baseball program is in good hands.

Looking for a Bid

In previous years, the Saints have always planned on winning the end of the season tournament to keep moving on. They usually go into the UMAC tournament ranked number one. Once they win the UMAC tournament, they move on to the regional tournament.
This year, however, the Saints are looking to get one of six bids in the country. This bid ensures them of moving on to the regional tournament. Next Sunday, the Saints will find out whether or not they received this bid. According to some of the players, they are fighting other teams for the sixth bid. They are right on the bubble of getting the sixth bid, which can be very frustrating not knowing if this weekend could be the end of their season. Only six teams in the whole country, who are considered independent teams, will get a bid to the regional tournament. St. Scholastica is considered independent because we just switched from the NAIA to Division 3. It will be a few years for the Saints to not be considered independent, but until then they will need to get one of the six bids.
The Saints play St. Olaf this week. If they win both games, they are almost guaranteed a bid. St. Olaf is considered big in region wins for the Saints. By guaranteeing a bid from winning both of these games, the Saints are under the assumption of winning the conference tournament over the weekend. If they lose this tournament, they can count themselves out of a bid.
So, how is it decided which team gets a bid to the regional tournament? Division 3 has set up guidelines to follow to give each team the fairest chance of getting a bid. There is a lot of criteria considered, but some is weighed more than others. The biggest one is the in region record. The second is the strength of schedule and if they played ranked teams. Last, they look at the team’s win/loss percentage. The Saints are doing very well in each category. With a pair of St. Olaf wins, it should ensure a bid. If they happen to lost to St. Olaf, it doesn’t count them out but it will be that much tougher to get a bid.

Saints Closing in on NCAA Record

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team took two out of three games over the weekend to the #2 team in the UMAC, the Martin Luther College Knights. On Friday the Saints shut-out the Knights 10-0 and 13-0 bringing their season shut-out total to 12 on the season. The Saints are now only 1 shut-out away from tying the NCAA Division III record for shut-out's in a season set in 1999 by both the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and The College of Saint Scholastica. The Saints will look to continue their assault on the record books this week as they finish off their regular season schedule with games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday against St. Olaf College, Presentation College, and Northland College. Saints Fall To Knights

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team suffered their first UMAC loss of the 2005 after going 18-0 in the UMAC in 2004. The Saints fell to the Martin Luther College Knights Saturday afternoon by the score of 2-1. After the loss, the Saints record fell to 27-4 overall and 15-1 in the UMAC. The Knights moved to 18-12 overall and 15-3 in the UMAC. The loss also was the Saints first loss at Wade Stadium in nearly a year, with their last home loss coming to St. Thomas 6-4 on May 2, 2004. The Saints will look to rebound when they take on St. Olaf College in a doubleheader this Thrusday, May 5, 2005 at Wade Stadium with the first game starting at 3:00 PM.

Saints Take First Two From Knights

The Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team snapped Martin Luther College's four-game winning streak Friday afternoon at Wade Stadium in Duluth. The Saints also created a new winning streak for themselves by beating the Knights twice in the double header. With the win the Saints improved to 27-3 overall and 15-0 in the UMAC. The Knights fell to 17-12 overall and 14-3 in the UMAC.

The two teams will meet again Saturday at Noon at Wade Stadium. Make sure to make it down to the Wade to cheer on the Saints as they work to continue their newest winning streak. Remember, Wade Stadium is now featuring a fully stocked concession stand featuring hot dogs, Coca-Cola, candy bars, and Budweiser products! We'll see you there!

This weekend the Saint Scholastica Saints baseball team will take to the field at Wade Stadium in Duluth against the #2 team in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, the Martin Luther College Knights. The Saints enter the three game series with record of 25-3 overall and 13-0 in the UMAC, while the Knights come to Duluth with a 17-10 overall record and a 14-1 record in the UMAC. The Saints will take to the field for the first time since they had their 22 game winning streak snapped last Sunday by the #25 ranked St. Thomas Tommies. The Knights enter the weekend on a modest four game winning streak following a sweep of the Minnesota-Morris Cougars last weekend at Mueller Park in New Ulm, MN.

The Knights are led by junior Jeff Dolan, who has started all 22 of the Knights games and is batting a robust .434 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, and 11 RBIs. The Knights also will bring senior outfielder Shane Krause who has also started all 22 games for the Knights and is batting .370 with 6 doubles, 2 triples, and is leading the Knights with 4 homeruns. Leading the Knights on the mound is senior Nate Hochmuth who has a 5-1 record and has started 7 games for the Knights. Hochmuth has pitched 4 complete games for the Knights and has struck out 29 batter in 45.1 innings of work.

Make sure to make it down to the Wade this Friday at 3:00 PM and Saturday at Noon to catch the Saints and the Knights as they battle atop the UMAC standings. We have also received word that this Friday marks the opening of the concession stand at the Wade, and that the City of Duluth has turned the water on, meaning the restrooms are up and running! So, anybody who used the indoor bathrooms last weekend, the city plumber would like to talk to you. Plus, that's kinda gross. Anyway, we have also heard that Wade Stadium has received permission from the college (and the nuns) to sell beer during CSS games! Russ "The Alligator Mascot"

The Saints have a team mascot named Russ. He is their pet alligator that has been with the team for about seven years. He was picked up on a trip to Florida, and has seen his share of baseball games. Russ is the Saints good luck charm and goes to every baseball game. One of the seniors usually takes Russ on the bus to all of the games. Russ even makes the annual spring Florida trip. He is clearly their number one fan!

He lives at the baseball apartment on campus (5D). He usually sits on the television in the living room and watches over the boys that live there. If Russ sees any of the boys start to get out of line, I was told that he will get angry and bite them. So I guess they all need to be very careful, because Russ has very sharp teeth. Right now, Russ is wearing his dri fit because it has been very cold in Duluth lately. Alligators get cold too, so they need some type of clothing to keep them warm. Of course he doesn’t need his dri fit down in Florida or when it is warm out. His clothing includes the baseball logo, which was colored on his dri fit with ink.
Unfortunately, Russ is getting old and will need to retire soon. His toes are falling off, his jaw is cracked, and part of his tail is cut off. When Russ dies, he will be buried at Wade Stadium. A new mascot will be found before Russ retires. Russ has been a wonderful good luck charm and will be greatly missed when he retires. The new mascot will have tough shoes to fill, but I am sure with time he will prove to be just as good as Russ.

The Saints seem to be winning a lot of games, but how are they really doing? As a softball player, I know that it is possible to win a lot of games but still play bad as a team. I have had my share of games where we win, but it just doesn’t feel like a win.
Recently, the Saints lost to St. Thomas. The came out really strong early in the game with a 4-0 lead. Feeling fairly comfortable with a four run lead can leave the defense a little too relaxed. Before they knew it, they had some defensive errors and four unearned runs. Offensively, luck was just not on the Saints side. They hit the ball hard and well, but just right at players. So, they didn’t play at the top of their game against St. Thomas, but how are they doing otherwise?
There impressive record would have you thinking probably very well. They have only lost three games all year. Last year they put up a lot of wins as well, with only few losses. Even though they have similar records, their talent and ability to play competitively against all teams has really improved. This year they are playing at the top of their game and not to the level of their opponents. They are putting up a lot more runs early in the game, which gives their opponents no chance of coming back in the game. Their pitching is usually always good, and when they play solid defense to back up their pitchers is when they have their best games. Clutch hitting has also seemed to be a factor this year, they are getting the hits when they need them. For the Saints this year, it all comes down to good defense and key hits, which the Saints have managed to do very well all season. Overall, I guess you could say that they record proves their competitiveness and ability to play against all teams.

It is April 26, and that's right, it SNOWED in Duluth, MN today putting to bed any thoughts of the Saints taking on Northland College at Wade Stadium as scheduled. The two teams were scheduled to finish last weeks 10-10 game that was called because of darkness (yes, we have electricity in Duluth, thus lights!) and had an additional 9-inning contest. We have yet to hear of a make up date for today's scheduled games. As soon as we hear, we will certainly be passing it on to you!
